Social Media: it’s not all about Facebook

1

March 28, 2016 by Alessio Bartoli

When it comes to western countries Facebook is most likely top of mind in people awareness on social networks. With about 1.59 billion monthly active users as of December 2015 according to Facebook itself, it’s yet the most used social network worldwide.

There’s more. Facebook also seems to be the favourite one by marketers, considering both usage and importance for their business. A survey run by Social Media Examiner on a base of more  than 3700 marketers (mainly located in US) describe Facebook as the king. Usage differences emerge of course depending on B2C or B2B focused marketers, but still, even on B2B markets Facebook is leading along with LinkedIn: 88% of the base states to use both.

Social media marketing is an essential part of every modern company’s marketing plan (and if it’s not, it needs to be), but you should consider which are the boundaries of your business before deciding what social network is best to get closer to your target.

Some useful insights about digital world you want to check are given by SimilarWeb and Alexa which provide web traffic data and analytics. Vincenzo Cosenza, on his personal blog VincosBlog is known to take an amazing map out of them: the world map of social networks.

World Map of Social Networks

Here are the outcomes:

  • Facebook is the leading social network in 129 out of 137 countries analyzed.
  • Japan is the only country where Twitter is the leader with 35 million monthly active users.
  • In Russian territories VKontakte and Odnoklassniki are still struggling to conquer the market.
  • In China QZone still dominates the Asian landscape with 653 million users.

Each of them has its own features, giving brands a wide range of opportunities to set a touchpoint with their costumers. You might start reading my review on Vkontakte.
